Oil Sketching from Life - Building confidence with Oil Paints

The most important aspect of the class is that you will be shown a process that if you practice, will give you the confidence to paint something realistic from life. It will show you how to see and interpret what is in front of you, so giving you the basic tools that an oil painter needs to then go on and express the inner artist, in whatever direction you wish to travel.

Jo Bansall is a classically trained oil painter and has created a unique way of practicing oil painting from life. It's a relatively inexpensive and portable way of sketching with oil paints.

In the class you'll learn:

1. How to set up and what you will need to oil sketch.

2. What to look for so that you can interpret what you see onto a piece of paper.

3. A six step process to completing the sketch including:

How to organise your paints and mix them.

Creating the outline.

Applying tones.

Blending colours.

Adding the details.

4. How to sketch a green apple using the process.

The project is to sketch a green apple, it's been designed so that you get an understanding of how everything works. After which you are then free to try and sketch anything you like knowing you have a process that you can rely on.

Jo has provided a beautiful and simple system for getting to grips with oil paints so that a small sketch/study can be done in a fairly short time without getting into a tangle with the materials, which always put me off before.

All that’s needed are 6 tubes of paint, a wooden palette and small sized oil paper for the painting, with these and great demonstrations and support from Jo. I’m discovering that sketching with this beautiful medium is opening up a whole new world of painting to me and it’s exciting.

I’m so glad I get to be doing this. Thank you Jo.
