Help with Oil Paints
Is there something you’ve always wanted to paint but have been put off because you feel you can’t or it wouldn’t look good? Would you like to use oil paints for the first time? Or would you like to improve your skill as an oil painter and are struggling to make the painting look three dimensional or realistic, then I can help you.
My name’s Jo Bansall and I started using oil paints for the first time in my early forties. I had no formal training before then and just sketched because I liked to. I then became frustrated that what I was doing never seemed to improve and looked flat so I began my journey by completing a four years of full-time training. I’m now a professional oil painter.
The Master Class has the basic knowledge that I have learnt from my classical training and practice so that you will end up painting a realistic still life whatever your experience with oil paints. You might be a complete beginner or feel you have no talent, you might be someone who has mainly painted abstract or someone frustrated with muddy colours and flat looking images. I believe that having these fundamental skills under your belt gives you more confidence to travel along your journey as a painter, in whatever direction you wish to then explore.
Here is a short video on how to make a painting look three dimensional.
Points covered in the Master Class.
Setting Up Your Still Life. This part is where you get to tell a story and start to compose your painting. Choosing objects and setting them up in a place where you can comfortably work with the right daylight. How to prepare the canvas and making quick oil sketches to make sure you’re happy with the composition.
Mapping Out. Use a technique to transfer what you see onto the canvas, once understood it will help you to observe and to paint things in proportion. Continue to compose the painting and once you've created the right beginning you will be well on the way to a satisfactory end result.
The Underpainting. By training your eyes to see three tones your painting will become three dimensional. Understanding how light falls on to an object will change your painting from being flat and two dimensional to being a painting where the images start to pop out of the canvas. Learn to create an underpainting and see why this can be so useful.
Colours - Simple is Beautiful. How to avoid a messy and confused palette that can then reflect in your painting and understand how using and mixing just six colours can create a realistic representation. Building layers, how to mix colours and the art of blending them.
Details - The Last Strokes of Genius. Time to make your painting come alive and find out how to make the different objects you've chosen have their unique characteristics.
